ā | Malia: "Now she just magically writes down all the answers?" Deaton: "It's not quite that simple." Lydia: "It never is." Deaton: "In automatic writing, the hand moves outside of any conscious awareness. Now, hopefully, the silence, the darkness, and the light will allow you to find a more comfortable trance-like state. Lydia, I want you to stare into the light, and let go of all thought..." |

Automatic writing, also known as Psychography, is the psychic ability to write without consciously being aware of it, typically in the form of words, which can then make up messages or warnings. It is a form of Divination.
This first occurred when Lydia unknowingly wrote "someone help me" backwards on the chalkboard at school while in a trance-like state. ("Venomous") Stiles also brought this ability up when trying to get Lydia to use a variety of typical psychic techniques to help find Deaton, although she failed at that time. ("Currents") Lydia later used automatic writing successfully during the time that the Wild Hunt was in Beacon Hills, writing "STILES" and "MISCHIEF" on a piece of paper to indicate that it was Stiles who had been erased.
