The relationship between Evolved True Alpha Werewolf Derek Hale and Beta Werewolf Cora Hale
Derek and Cora are the two youngest children of Talia Hale and her unnamed partner, the younger siblings of Laura Hale, the nephew and niece of Peter Hale, and the first cousin of Malia Tate. They were also two of the four survivors of the Hale House Fire in 2005 (with the other two being Laura and Peter, the latter of whom suffered severe burns over the majority of his body and went into a coma for six years). Because Cora went on the run after the fire and settled down in South America, believing her entire family to be dead, Derek and the other survivors assumed that Cora, too, had perished in the fire, leaving the two separated for many years.
It wasn't until rumors of a newly ascended Hale Alpha rebuilding a pack in Beacon Hills that Cora realized that some of her family could have survived, and so she made the trek back to California to investigate these claims. It was then that she was captured by the Alpha Pack, who intended to use her to manipulate Derek into joining their ranks. Fortunately for them both, when Derek and his ally, Scott McCall, broke into the First National Bank vault (where Cora was being held with fellow Hale Pack members Vernon Boyd and Erica Reyes, the latter of whom had been killed by Kali a few days earlier) to rescue their friends, Derek was reunited with his long-lost younger sister for the first time in over half a decade.
Upon her release, Cora promptly joined Derek's newly formed pack, all of whom were so furious at the Alpha Pack for the destruction they had wrought that they put their efforts toward defeating them, which ultimately cost them the life of their packmate, Boyd. When Jennifer Blake, a Dark Druid hell-bent on defeating the Alpha Pack began interfering with their plans, Jennifer poisoned Cora with mistletoe in order to manipulate Derek to join her side instead, which he ultimately ended up doing after he sacrificed his Alpha spark to heal Cora and save her life.
After both the Alphas and the Darach had been defeated, Derek accompanied Cora back to South America, where she decided to return to the pack she had lived within the years after the fire before she had returned to Beacon Hills. However, Derek continued to protect Cora even from afar, allowing himself to be tortured by the Calavera Family of Hunters under the mistaken impression that they were after Cora (though, in reality, they were after Kate Argent, a recently turned Werejaguar). It is unknown how much contact Derek and Cora have with each other in the time since they parted ways; since Derek left Beacon Hills at the end of Season 4, it is likely that they have seen each other in the time since, especially given the revelation that Derek spent a significant amount of time in Brazil while he was traveling before he reunited with the pack in 2013.
It is unknown if Cora ever came to learn of her brother's death in 2026 to save his son Eli and the McCall Pack members and their allies from the Nogitsune.
Throughout Teen Wolf[]
In Chaos Rising, the Beacon Hills gang learned from Isaac's memories that their friends and packmates Erica Reyes and Vernon Boyd were being held hostage by the Alpha Pack in the vault of the First National Bank. Upon gaining this information, Derek and Scott decided to break into the bank and rescue them despite the risk of doing so on the full moon, not yet knowing for sure that Erica was already dead and completely unaware that Derek's sister was among the Alphas' hostages.
It wasn't until Derek and Scott pummeled through the hecatolite walls of the vault and inadvertently walked into a Mountain Ash-lined trap that Derek realized that his sister Cora was standing next to Boyd. Not believing his eyes, Derek called Cora out by name, only for Cora to anxiously urge him to leave, as she had been starved from the effects of the full moon for three months due to the hecatolite blocking the light and was now losing control over her Werewolf side as a result of the moonlight now pouring in through the hole in the wall. Just as Stiles and Peter called to inform the pair about this same fact, Boyd and Cora were unable to hold themselves back any longer and immediately lunged for them, right at the same time that Scott realized that Marin Morrell, the Alpha Pack's Druid Emissary, had surrounded the entire vault with Mountain Ash, trapping them inside with Boyd and Cora.
Despite Derek and Scott's best efforts, they were unable to hold their own against the feral Werewolves, and the fight escalated until Boyd nearly killed Scott by jamming his claws into Scott's abdomen and lifting him in the air. Fortunately for both of them, Allison Argent (who had sneaked into the bank prior to Derek and Scott's arrival in hopes of confirming that Boyd and Erica were there) found them and disrupted the Mountain Ash barrier to free the boys before they could be killed by the feral wolves. However, in the process, she inadvertently allowed Boyd and Cora to flee, setting the two loose on the town of Beacon Hills, and forcing the three to figure out how they could use their respective skills to catch them before they could hurt any civilians.
In Fireflies, a short time had passed since Boyd and Cora's escape from First National Bank, and Derek and Scott had made their way to the Beacon Hills Preserve to look for them, knowing that they were a huge risk to the town in their feral, out-of-control state. After Derek and Scott reconvened by the entrance to the preserve, the two briefly discussed the fact that, like themselves, Boyd and Cora had decided to stick together as well, and debated on whether or not this would make it easier to catch them. Scott then confessed that he had just been forced to step in to prevent Boyd and Cora from killing a couple of kids who were catching fireflies, leading Derek to remind Scott that, in their current condition, Boyd and Cora were liable to kill everyone and anyone they came upon as they ran around.
Derek and Scott, with help from their friend and packmate Isaac Lahey, managed to track down Cora and Boyd near a campsite where two young adult women, Caitlin and Emily, were having a romantic getaway, with Scott once again saving one of them, Caitlin, from being killed by the feral wolves, though the three lost track of them in the process.
Afterward, Scott was called by Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin, as the latter had found the body of a lifeguard whose throat appeared to have been clawed out at the swimming pool during a Banshee fugue state. When Scott relayed this information to the others, Derek became confused as to how Cora and Boyd could have possibly managed to kill someone at the pool, as it was on the other side of the preserve. Scott quietly reminded Derek that they had killed an innocent person, which was their fault, Derek sadly insisted that it was his own fault.
However, when it was suggested that they get more help, Derek argued that they would be able to catch them, leading Isaac to bring up a pertinent pointāwhat would they do with them once they did catch them? For a brief moment, Derek considered that it may be easier to kill them to ensure that they wouldn't harm anyone else, but Scott was convinced there was a better way that didn't involve killing anyone and instead suggested they consult Chris Argent, a former Werewolf Hunter who had experience in catching rogue wolves. While waiting for Scott to convince Argent to help them, Isaac brought up the topic of Cora in the car, implying that he found her attractive and was interested in getting to know her better. Derek gave Isaac a scowling look, and Isaac, slightly afraid, got the hint and stated that he would "ask later [...] or never."
Once Argent was on board, the four went back to the preserve, where Argent insisted that trying to track Cora and Boyd by print was useless for anyone but himself, as he was the only one trained to do so. Argent went on to acknowledge that they were at a disadvantage because Derek, Isaac, and Scott were all trying to resist the urge to transform and run wild, whereas Boyd and Cora had embraced it, before adding that they should be focusing on using their superhuman sense of smell to track them by scent instead. He also advised them to use their Werewolf eyes to track them due to the full moon increasing their heat signature and thus making them easier to see with their enhanced sight. Argent asked Derek when he last saw Cora, and Derek reminded him that it had been years, as he believed she had died in the Hale House Fire. When he asked if Derek believed he had a lock on her scent, Derek sadly admitted that he did not.
After some debate between the four men, they ultimately decided to lure and trap Cora and Boyd in the Beacon Hills High School boiler room, believing the steel door would be strong enough to contain them and assuming that the school would be empty at this hour. Argent then gave each of them an ultrasonic emitter to place around the school in order to push the feral wolves into the boiler room so they could be locked in until the full moon ended.
While they were split up, each setting up the trap, Derek was approached by his uncle Peter Hale, who remarked on the fact that Derek was working with a Hunter before mocking Derek for thinking that their plan could work. Derek pointed out that Peter didn't seem to be offering up any better options, and when Peter retorted, "Personally, I'm trying to cut down on futile endeavors," he revealed that Cora was alive. However, Peter seemed to have already been informed of this fact and stated that they should "throw the reunion party when she's not an unstoppable killing machine."
Derek insisted that he would be able to stop her, only for Peter to state that to do that, he'd have to kill her, then adding darkly that this was the entire point of what was currently happening-- Deucalion purposely set Derek up to rescue his Betas, knowing that by doing so, he would be forced to kill them, and although the Alpha did not expect Boyd and Cora to get free, it didn't change his goal, which was to get Derek to kill his Betas and join the Alpha Pack as an Augmented Alpha. He then highlighted Derek's conundrum: he would either have to accept that Cora and Boyd, his own family and pack, needed to be killed, or he had to be okay with a few innocent people dying at their hands. Peter also made a point of reminding Derek that, at the end of the day, he was still an Alpha and could always make more Werewolves, but Derek was adamant that he could stop Cora and Boyd before they killed anyone else and without having to kill them in the process.
Despite Peter's disbelief, Derek and the others did, in fact, succeed in their plan, albeit with several hiccups along the way. When Cora and Boyd first entered the school, they became spooked by the sight of their Alpha, Derek, standing in the hallway and decided to jump over the school instead of going through it; fortunately, Allison Argent caught them behind the school and forced them back inside by shooting flash-bang arrows at them, allowing Isaac to lock the doors behind them. Derek and Scott then lured Cora and Boyd into the boiler room, only to find after they had managed to slip out the door and lock it before they could break out that they had locked the two feral wolves in with a teacher, Jennifer Blake, who had been grabbing school supplies while grading papers at the school.
This forced Derek to have to go back into the boiler room and essentially pin Cora and Boyd in chokeholds until the full moon ended, preventing them from hurting Jennifer while getting severely clawed up in the process by acting as a human scratching post. Once the sun came up, Cora and Boyd passed out from exhaustion, and Derek nearly did the same as well. Isaac and Scott ran into the boiler room, where Derek instructed them to take Cora and Boyd back to the loft while he dealt with the traumatized teacher hiding in a nearby corner.
In Unleashed, Cora was seen performing series of pull-ups on a pipe in Derek's loft and seemed getting exhausted. Concerned, Derek asked his little sister to take a break because he could see that she had not completely healed from what the Alphas made her go through. However, Cora, determined to get revenge on the Alphas for holding her hostage for nearly four months as well as for their murder of Erica, did not listen to her brother, claiming that she was done laying around. When Derek advised, "Then sit." Cora switched to push-ups and Derek knocked her off balance, angering her to the point that she traded blows with Derek briefly, urging him to fight back, which he did not.
This was the last straw for Cora, who could not be more disappointed with her brother, ranting on how she spent the last four months of her life locked in a bank vault because of him. She went on to confirm that she had heard rumors about a new Hale Alpha in Beacon Hills building his own packāher brother turned out to be alive after she spent many years believing him to be dead. Derek could not say much, but "I'm sorry to disappoint you."
They were interupted by the loud alarm of the apartment, which Derek viewed as no good news. Indeed, two of the Alphas, Kali and Ennis, break into the loft ready for battle. Cora once again disobeyed her brother's warnings and charged at Ennis, but he slammed her to the ground rather easily and held her in a chokehold. Kali fought Derek and ended up stabbing him through his lower back with a pole, much to Cora's horror. Deucalion joined the scene and insisted he wanted to have a chat. He went on to apologize to Derek for Ennis and Kali's vicious manners, claiming to have asked them to be "gentle," only for Kali to reply that she was being gentle as Deuc had asked. Knowing Derek would not talk to them in the eye with Cora's life in the line, Deucalion silently ordered Ennis to release Cora from his grip as a sign of good faith.
Approximately an hour later, Derek's condition was visibly deteriorating as he spit out further amounts of black blood and Cora desperately yelled at Kali that she was killing Derek. The toe-clawed Alpha reassured her that although she had the strength to do such thing, they did not want Derek to die before Deucalion could get to the point of their visit. They listened to Deucalion's story over how one of his Betas had attempted to take the role of Alpha for himself and such act led Deucalion to kill him in self-defense, unaware that the Beta's power would be added to his own and would increase his strength, speed and other powers to an even higher degree. He eventually slayed the rest of his packmates and absorbed their powers as well, allowing him to become a "greater individual whole," before Ennis and Kali did the exact same thing and joined him. The Alpha Pack leader touched Derek's face and showed agreement with Kali's statement in that he did indeed look like his and Cora's mother, Talia Hale. Upon leaving clear that they planned to kill Derek if he did not slay his pack of "maladjusted teenagers" as part of his initiation into the Alpha Pack, the Alphas removed the pipe from Derek's back and left the apartment, allowing Cora to rush to her brother's side.
In that same evening, Cora was hiding in one of the loft's walls as she listened to Derek kicking Isaac out of the loft. Although Derek did his best to cover it up with the excuse that Cora was living there as well, it became clear that he was pushing Isaac away from him in the name of his safety from the Alphas. Once he had exhausted all other ways, Derek finally tossed a glass at Isaac's head, which triggered memories of the young Beta back when he used to be abused by his vicious father. This tactic ultimately guaranteed Isaac's departure, though Cora visibly showed disgust over Derek's behaviour towards Isaac.
In Frayed, Derek and Cora gathered at Derek's loft with Peter and Boyd to work out a plan for a preemptive strike against the Alpha Pack. Soon enough, Scott joined the debate and revealed that the Alphas were linving the same apartment as the Argents, only to be shocked when Boyd claimed that he and Cora had already discovered the Alphas' hiding spot by stalking Ethan and Aiden. Once he was made aware of their plan to kill the Alphas, he immediately went against the concept of murder, earning agreement from Peter, who made it clear that he did not appreciate Scott's "blandly-moral" attitude but in his own perspective, he believed that the risk was greater than the reward they would achieve. An annoyed Cora expressed her confusion towards their reasons for needing Scott, prompting Derek to quickly remind her that Scott was instrumental in releasing Cora from the captivity of the Alphas. When Scott retorted that there was no way that they could kill a pack of Alphas that powerful, Cora corrected him by reiterating that they were only going after Deucalion, as she, Boyd, and Derek were under the impression that defeating Deucalion would cause the rest of the pack to fall apart.
Certain that Derek would be getting himself and his pack killed, Isaac and Scott attempted to come to a truce with the so-called Alpha of Alphas in the Abandoned Mall. Unfortunately, Cora, Derek and Boyd crashed the meeting and despite Scott's best efforts to convince Derek to let him handle things his own way, Derek insisted that Deucalion was too much of a threat to remain alive. However, they had underestimated Deucalion, who had brought Ennis, Kali, and the twins with him, making the Hale Pack severely outmatched. The Alpha Pack soon gained the upper-hand and Derek was given an ultimatum to either kill Boyd or Cora. Suddenly, Allison Argent started shooting flash-bang arrows, causing a distraction that allowed Cora and Isaac to get the injured Boyd out fof harm's way. Derek and Ennis engaged in combat while Cora watched from afar. Although Scott sliced Ennis' Achilles tendon with his claws in an attempt to help Derek gain the advantage, Ennis managed to pull Derek down with him, causing them to fall to their presumed deaths and land onto the escalators below.
The next day, Cora decided to investigate the escalators at the the Abandoned Mall that Ennis and Derek had fallen onto. After having been searching for a while, she was soon joined by her uncle Peter, who Cora remained distrustful of, especially after learning that it was Peter who had killed her older sister, Laura, to become the Alpha. Upon expressing their distrust in one another due to having not seen each other for the last six years, Peter finally spoke that he and Cora shared the same reason for being there in the first place- what happened to Derek and Ennis' bodies and if one of them managed to find the strength to get up. They went to Alan Deaton's animal clinic and when Cora was about to confront Deaton, Peter grabbed her by the arm, having sensed the presence of the Alpha Pack members in the clinic. They witnessed a distraught Kali coming out of the clinic and unleashing a powerful Alpha Roar that had caused the alarms in the cars around her to go off all at once, which forced Aiden to try to calm her down. Both Peter and Cora realized that Ennis must have passed on.
In Currents, Kali, Ethan, and Aiden became vengeful towards Derek, deeming him to be the cause of Ennis' passing, with none of the three having any idea that this was actually a complot of Deucalion, who had purposely murdered Ennis to place further incentive in his fellow Alphas to force Derek's decision of joining their ranks. The Alphas quickly spray-painted their symbol in the windows of the main room early in the morning prior to disappearing, though Derek and Cora soon discovered such thing through the alarm going off. Both Derek and Cora became concerned and the former warned the latter that there would be a confrontation that night between him and the Alphas.
In the afternoon, through means unknown, Derek discovered that his reluctant ally and close friend of Scott, Lydia Martin, was having a secret affair with Aiden and sent Cora to confront the young Banshee on his behalf at the high school. Cora managed to separate Lydia and Aiden by pulling the fire alarm and the two young women delved into a serious conversation. Cora warned Lydia that she would not hesitate in plucking her tongue from her head if she did not agree to break up with Aiden as per Derek's terms. Surprisingly, Lydia did not express any fear and reassured Cora that she could handle a powerful Alpha, going so far as to honestly inform Cora that her previous boyfriend, Jackson Whittemore, was a "homicidal lizard." Before Lydia could leave, Cora grabbed the Banshee by her forearm and refused to release her until Stiles intervened.
At night, Cora had joined Scott, Stiles and Lydia in discovering where Deaton was being held captive by the Darach. Once they discovered that the veterinarian was being held in First National Bank vault, Cora was informed by Boyd that the plan he, Isaac and Derek had created to fight the Alpha Pack was unsuccessful due to the Alphas cutting the power to the loft. Cora, Stiles and Lydia rushed over to Derek's loft, where they turned on all the power switches in the electrical room to electrocute the Alphas. Unfortunately, even though the trap successfully weakened Kali, Derek and Boyd got severely weakened as well, disrupting Boyd's healing factor. The furious Kali forced the twins to hold Derek's clawed hands upward and she shoved Boyd's weakened body against them, forcing Derek to take Boyd's life and powers as the first step into the Alphas' ranks. Kali gave the Hale Alpha one final ultimatum-- claim the lives and powers of his remaining Betas until the next full moon or Kali would mercilessly slaughter them all. Just after Boyd had succumbed to his wounds, Lydia, Stiles and Cora arrived to the room and the latter suffered an emotional meltdown, weeping over the lifeless body of the boy with whom she formed a close relationship while in captivity. Behind them, Stiles approached the devastated and guilt-ridden Derek, whose hands were shaking over the fact that he had just taken the life of one of his own Betas, and placed his hand on his shoulder in an effort to comfort him.
In Visionary, during Stiles' visit to the loft, Cora explained one of the important protocols in the Werewolf community-- find a refuge, hide from your enemies the time necessary and heal. This was exactly what Peter and Derek did when confronted and nearly killed by Argent Hunters nearly a decade ago. Stiles talked to Cora about how he was upset about Derek's absence, which he cares about because of the many bad events that happened in the past few weeks, namely his good friend Heather being ritually-sacrificed, Deaton nearly getting the same fate as Heather, Scott's suicide attempt in Glen Capri Motel and, finally, the deaths of Boyd and Erica at the hands of evil Alphas. Cora defended Derek, asking Stiles what Derek could've done about any of that. Stiles believed Derek should be doing something because he was the one that everyone else was after. Cora admitted that the Derek of today was much different than when she knew him and when Stiles curiously asked how. Peter arrived and proceeded to tell them about what Derek used to be like and what changed him. He told the story of teenage Derek and his first girlfriend, Paige, who Peter claimed Derek had killed out of mercy after he had asked Ennis to turn her but she rejected the bite.
After Peter left, Cora and Stiles talked about the story. Cora asked why he had a look on his face that made her want to punch him, to which Stiles joked that she's definitely Derek's sister. When Stiles claimed that he didn't believe Peter and wanted to hear Derek's side, Cora thought it would be unwise to ask Derek about the girl he loved and killed.
In The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Cora tracked Aiden down to the high school and lured him to the boys' locker room, where she planned to kill in revenge for the part he played in Boyd's death. However, she was no match for his Alpha-level strength and he striked Cora in the temple with a weight, only to be stopped in his tracks by the timely interference of Ethan, Scott and Stiles. Ethan did not care over who started the fight and insisted that they had to honour the ultimatum that Kali had given Derek, which meant that they were not supposed to attack him or any of his loved ones until the next full moon. Cora criticized Scott, Stiles, and Lydia for not retaliating against the Alphas who were hurting their friends and for being unable to prevent the Darach from claiming more innocent lives. A short while later, Cora was seen aiding Stiles in introducing the supernatural community of Beacon Hills to Sheriff Stilinski, who they believed could be a potential traget of the Darach, and she tried to transform into her wolf form to prove that they were being serious, only for her to mysteriously pass out instead. She was transported to Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital and she was resting while Derek worriedly sat beside her hospital bed until she woke up. Cora asked what was happening to her, and Derek answered that he didn't know, followed by "But I'm not leaving, okay? Not again." He then kissed her softly on the forehead.
In The Overlooked, Scott and Stiles managed to prove Jennifer Blake's identity as the Darach. Derek was furious at having been used by Jennifer and prepared to execute her, but Jennifer begged him to let her go because she was not only the only one who possessed the location of the kidnapped Stilinski but also the only one who could save Cora. At Jennifer's suggestion, Derek called Peter, who reported that Cora's condition was getting worse and she had vomited a combination of black blood and mistletoe just a few minutes ago. He realized Jennifer is responsible for Cora's condition and was once again about to kill Jennifer for what she had done, but she, Scott and Stiles convinced him to hold off so she could help find Sheriff Stilinski and heal Cora. Derek, Scott, Stiles and Jennifer went to the hospital so Jennifer could save Cora. However, in the hospital Jennifer refused to do so until she was safe herself, as the Alphas were trying to kill her.
