The Sibling Relationship between Beta Werewolf Hayden Romero and Human Valerie Clark.

Their relationship is first shown after Valerie’s introduction in Creatures of the Night and it’s later revealed that she is the sister and legal guardian of Hayden.

Little is known about their life prior to the series though it seems that they’ve lived in Beacon Hills since Hayden’s been in middle school at least. At some point, Valerie became the legal guardian of Hayden (although it’s unclear what the circumstances were that led to this). However, it seems that Valerie has been the legal guardian of Hayden for at least a couple of years, given that Hayden explains that she took a job at Sinema as a server out of guilt for the financial burden placed on her sister after Hayden’s kidney transplant (which occurred sometime in middle school). Sometime prior to season 5, Valerie gets a job as a deputy at the Beacon Hill’s Sheriff’s Department.

Hayden and Valerie both spend the majority of season 5 dealing with the events brought about by the arrival of the Dread Doctors in Beacon Hills, Hayden as a Chimera and Valerie as a cop alongside the rest of the Sheriff’s Department. Despite Hayden’s heavy involvement in the supernatural, first as a chimera and a member of the Chimera Pack and then as Scott’s second-bitten Beta and a member of the McCall Pack, it seems that Valerie is still unaware of the existence of the supernatural (though she is aware of the strangeness in Beacon Hills).

In the beginning of season 6, they both are affected by the appearance of the Ghost Riders, with Hayden working alongside Liam, Mason, Corey, and Theo to figure out how to defeat them (and becoming a victim of them until she is freed along with everyone else) and Valerie getting her memories manipulated by them.

Sometime between Season 6A and Season 6B, Valerie and Hayden move away from Beacon Hills with the reason being Hayden wanting to keep Valerie safe from the supernatural world (though it is still unclear if Valerie knows about the supernatural world or that Hayden’s a Werewolf).

Trivia

• Valerie and Hayden are one of the only siblings on the show and the only ones who are both still alive and not separated.
  • The other siblings on the show being Laura, Derek, and Cora, Theo and Tara, Ethan and Aiden, and Brett and Lori.
    • Laura is dead and Derek and Cora separated after Cora moved to South America.
    • Tara died when Theo and Tara were kids.
    • Aiden died in Ethan’s arms.
    • Brett and Lori died holding hands with Lori’s last words being her tearfully stating she couldn’t take his pain.
• Valerie and Hayden share some similarities with Brett and Lori.
  • Both pairs of siblings lost their parents at some point, making the older sibling step into a parental and/or protective role toward their younger sibling (Valerie literally becoming Hayden’s legal guardian and Brett being incredibly protective towards Lori).
  • Both pairs also don’t share a last name with their sibling, making it unclear if they’re half siblings, step siblings, or adopted siblings.
