ā Katashi explaining the Oni and Kitsune to Chris Argent, Allison Argent, and Isaac Lahey in Silverfinger
|
Katashi, also known as Silverfinger, was a character that was introduced during Season 3 of MTV's Teen Wolf. He was a member of the Yakuza who knew Chris Argent in the past. He also proved himself to be very knowledgeable about Oni, Kitsune and Nogitsune.
Throughout Teen Wolf[]
In Silverfinger, after masked, shadowy ninja-creatures began attacking the supernatural creatures of Beacon Hills, Chris Argent told his daughter Allison Argent, Scott McCall, and Isaac Lahey the story of his first encounter with them.
It was in 1988, during Argent's first arms deal as an eighteen-year-old, newly graduated Hunter; his father Gerard sent him to Japan for the deal, though he purposely neglected to tell him that he would be dealing with the Yakuza, or Japanese mafia, stating that he wanted to see Argent's ability to improvise and survive. Argent went on to meet with around a dozen members, including the Kumicho, their leader, and Katashi, his subordinate.
Halfway through the deal, three Oni appeared out of the darkness, and when the Yakuza began to respond by shooting at them, the Oni immediately began striking them down, one by one, in order to get to the leader, who, unknown to Argent at that point, was possessed by a Nogitsune. The Oni then successfully killed the Kumicho by all of them driving their swords into his abdomen at once.
Argent, who had ducked down onto the ground, saw Katashi rise to his feet and assumed he intended to take the Oni on, so he tried to help him out by loading one of several silver bullets he had forged as his initiation into the Hunter lifestyle and shot one of the Oni in the face. While it didn't kill the creature, it did shatter its mask, revealing that it was composed of pure darkness and had no face.
In the present day, Argent went on to explain that the man he saved, Katashi, better known as Silverfinger, acquired that named from the silver prosthetic little finger he wore. He believed if they could get in touch with Katashi, they could see if he could tell them more about the demonic creatures, and so Argent, Allison, and Isaac came up with a plan to lure Katashi out of hiding by attempting to sell him the Argents' flint-lock turnover pistol from 1645.
With Isaac posing as Argent for the buy and dealing with Katashi's henchman, Kincaid, Argent and Allison located Katashi, who was watching the deal go down on camera. Just as Allison had disarmed Katashi, Kincaid came in with Isaac in a choke-hold, Kincaid's claws digging into his neck, until finally, Argent explained why they were there by showing him the pieces of the broken mask from their gun deal, causing Katashi to recognize Argent and ultimately ordered Kincaid to let Isaac go.
Katashi went on to inform Argent, Allison and Isaac that the demon warriors are known as the Oni and described them as being "unstoppable." According to Katashi, no man-made weapon he knows of can hurt the Oni, and he compared them to a force of nature, adding, "You don't fight a tsunami. You endure it, and you hope you are not destroyed in its path." He noticed the mark one of the Oni had burned behind Isaac's ear and stated that it was the Japanese kanji for "self," explaining that the Oni were looking for someone who was no longer themselvesāa person possessed by a dark Kitsune spirit.
Katashi continued to explain that there were thirteen types of Kitsune, which included Celestial, Wild, Ocean, and Thunder, but that there was also a dark type known as a Void Kitsune, or a Nogitsune, which possesses a host and gains power through causing pain, tragedy, strife, and chaos. He then revealed that the Oni were looking for someone possessed by a Nogitsune, leading Argent to realize that the Kumicho had been possessed by one as well, which is why they attacked during the gun deal. Katashi confirmed this, stating that the Nogitsune was the reason why the Kumicho was able to rise up the ranks of the Yakuza family.
He then went on to reveal why he was missing his little finger, and thus why he had the prosthetic that gave him the nickname "Silverfinger;" there is a ritual known as yubitsume in which a Yakuza cuts off their middle finger at the joint and offered it to their superior as penance for a mistake, which Katashi had made years before the gun deal with the Oni. Katashi admitted that he had no idea why everyone assumed he planned on taking on the Oni by himself, when in fact he planned on running for his life.
Argent looked stunned as Katashi confessed that, had Argent not shot the Oni when he did, he would have looked like a coward in front of the others in the Yakuza, and that he would have not just lost his finger, but he would have been executed for the shame brought to them. Acknowledging that he owed both his life and his honor to Argent for what he did for him, Katashi, apologizing for not having more information to help him, offered one last piece of advice-- "If there is a Nogitsune among you, let the Oni destroy it... even if it is your own daughter."
In Letharia Vulpina, it was revealed that Silverfinger was murdered, presumably by "Void Stiles," who had been revealed to be possessed by the Nogitsune. "Void Stiles" then framed Argent and Derek for the crime to distract the Beacon County Sheriff's Station so they would not know that he planted a bomb there until it was too late, created chaos, strife, and pain that he could feed on and become more powerful.
In Echo House, Katashi was mentioned again by Alan Deaton, Argent (who was on the phone from the jail), Scott and Allison. Deaton revealed that he, on the information given to him by Argent, had been searching for a Shugendo Scroll, which they believed had the information needed to exorcise a Nogitsune from a host. Deaton had managed to track down the last person who inquired about it, which was Kincaid, Katashi's henchman. They assumed that Katashi must have found it before his death, and as a paranoid recluse, he would have kept it close to him at all times.
Allison asked if the scrolls came in different sizes, and when Deaton stated that they could come in any size, Allison realized that it was probably small enough for Katashi to keep inside his prosthetic finger. However, since the finger and the rest of his belongings that hadn't been blown up in the Sheriff's station explosion were taken as evidence and being sent to federal lock-up, the McCall Pack, with help from Ethan and Aiden, had to plan a heist to get it from the armored truck.
However, their plan had to be changed at the last minute when the pack, as they were planting a tracker on the armored car so they could jump it on the road, saw Kincaid appear and incapacitate Deputy Parrish and his partner, who were going to drive the van, so he could take the finger for himself. Scott and Allison held Kincaid at crossbow-point and insisted he give them Katashi's finger, pointing out that there was a suitcase with $150,000 in there that he could take instead, but Kincaid just laughed and informed them that the scroll inside the finger was worth $3 million.
This standoff led to a battle in which the pack initially seemed to be easily defeated until the twins showed up and managed to gain the upper-hand, allowing them to take the scroll that Katashi had hidden in his prosthetic finger and leaving the finger itself behind. It was also implied in The Dark Moon that the pack also stole the suitcase with $150,000 of Katashi's money in it from the armored truck as well, as they used some of it to try to pay off the Calavera Family in an attempt to get them to let Derek Hale go.
