ā | I know something's going on. I know you don't want to talk about it. But you're still my best friend. And, um, considering the fact that the last good friend I made turned out to be a professional killer, I don't have too many options for new ones. So, when you're ready to talk, talk. Until then, I know I can kick your ass in at least one of these games. | ā |
ā Mason to Liam in A Promise to the Dead
|
The relationship between Werewolf Liam Dunbar and Human/Former Beast Mason Hewitt.
Liam and Mason have presumably been best friends since they were children, and their friendship has seemingly never wavered since that point. In early 2012, after Liam was inadvertently given the Bite by Scott McCall and turned into a Beta Werewolf, Mason immediately knew that something was going on with his best friend, but understood that Liam needed to tell him in his own time and did not push him to reveal his secret.
At the beginning of Season 5, Liam was finally forced to reveal his Werewolf nature to Mason after they were chased by a brown wolf in the high school, but rather than being afraid or angry, Mason was instantly accepting of this revelation and wasted no time in joining the McCall Pack to help them fight supernatural threats. However, it was soon revealed that Mason, who was a genetic chimera due to having absorbed his own twin in the womb, had become the Dread Doctors' sole successful Chimera, which led him to become the host for the spirit of the Beast of Gevaudan, Sebastien Valet, who had previously been killed in the 18th century after a four-year rampage that led to hundreds of deaths over two continents.
As the host for Sebastien's spirit, Mason gained all of the powers of the Beast and was unconsciously forced to transform by the Doctors using specific frequencies, causing him to slaughter several dozen people over the course of several weeks. Upon learning that Mason was the Beast, Liam and the rest of the McCall Pack dedicated themselves to saving Mason's life while also defeating the Beast, a feat that they were eventually able to fulfill against all odds, allowing Liam and Mason to reunite once again.
Liam and Mason maintained a solid friendship for the rest of the series, though there was some tension in the beginning of Season 6 due to Liam not trusting Mason's boyfriend Corey Bryant due to his previous association with Theo Raeken and the Chimera Pack. However, when it became clear that the animosity between Liam and Corey could potentially put Mason in a position where he felt like he might have to choose between them, the two reconciled and even managed to make progress on their investigation into the Ghost Riders, who were ramping up their activity in Beacon Hills.
With the older pack members preparing to go to college, Liam, Mason, and their respective significant others, Hayden and Corey, began to make up a mini-pack within the McCall Pack as the younger generation, who were slowly taking on more responsibility in preparations for when the aforementioned older members left, with Liam acting as informal Alpha in Scott's place and Mason taking a role similar to the one Stiles held as an informal advisor. Liam went above and beyond to get into the Phantom Train Station in order to rescue Hayden and Mason from the Ghost Riders, stealing one of the Riders' horses to make this happen, and Liam and Mason were instrumental in diverting the Riders' "train" from the pocket dimension while Scott and the others did their part in the real world.
In the second half of Season 6, Mason maintained close contact with Liam and the rest of the pack, even at the risk of his own safety due to Monroe's Hunter Army targeting the supernatural and any humans willing to protect and defend them, despite Liam's efforts to keep him away from the fighting. In the final battle, Liam and Mason (who, while split up, were still working in a collective effort with Theo Raeken and Corey Bryant, respectively) played a significant role in holding off the Hunters until the rest of the pack could defeat the Anuk-ite, releasing a number of the Hunters from its fear-inducing powers that were encouraging them to take up arms against their supernatural neighbors.
Liam and Mason are also known as Miam or Lason by fans.
In The Benefactor, Mason had just gotten off of the school bus at Beacon Hills High School and made plans for the night with his new friends, Garrett and Violet, when he saw Liam running toward the school, looking frazzled; unbeknownst to Mason, Liam had just been inadvertently given the Bite the night before by Scott McCall, who then panicked and kidnapped him, bringing him back to his house, from which Liam eventually escaped and returned home.
Mason, looking confused, asked Liam why he wasn't on the bus, and Liam, shaken and confused himself due to the changes that were happening to him as a result of his impending transformation into a Werewolf and the full moon that night, lied weakly and stated that he ran, causing Mason to incredulously remind him that he lived three miles away from the school.
Liam, trying to back up his story, awkwardly insisted that he just started running, which led Mason to determine that his ankle (which he had sprained at lacrosse practice the previous day, causing him to go to the hospital, where the events with the Wendigo Sean Walcott eventually resulted in him being bitten) was fine.
However, before Liam could respond, Mason noticed the bandage on his left forearm, where Scott had bitten Liam the previous night, and asked him what had happened. Overwhelmed by the questions and the bizarre changes happening within his body, Liam began to sweat and got shaky, forcing him to lean on a nearby railing to keep himself upright. Mason, now completely concerned, asked Liam if he was okay, but Liam, knowing he couldn't talk about anything currently going on with him, excused himself by stating that he had to get to class and promising to talk to Mason later.
When Scott and his best friend Stiles tried and failed to get him to listen to them about Liam's transformation into a Werewolf and the full moon that night, they had to figure out another way to get Liam to come to them, which ultimately resulted in everyone voting for their packmate Kira Yukimura to ask Liam to attend a "party" at Lydia's family's lake house, where they would hold an intervention and chain him up for the night alongside fellow packmate and Werecoyote Malia, who was still learning control herself after eight years of living as a full coyote in the woods.
After class, Liam and Mason walked into the hallway from their classroom, where Liam was immediately taken aback by the sight of Kira walking confidently down the staircase in front of him. Unfortunately for Kira, she lost her balance and fell down the stairs, but this ended up working out due to Liam rushing over to her and checking to make sure she was okay, giving her the perfect opportunity to ask him to the party, which he accepted.
That night, when Kira was driving the two of them to the party, Mason texted Liam to see where he was, and, after Kira lied and stated that "everyone" was going to be at Lydia's "party," invited Mason to join them, which led Mason to invite what appeared to be the entire freshman class to the house as well.
As expected, Liam did not take his intervention well, but soon he was confronted with the facts when his fingernails lengthened into claws, his teeth into fangs, and the rest of his body began transforming into a Werewolf, forcing Scott and Kira to bring him to the boathouse to chain him up. Meanwhile, inside, where Lydia had no choice but to pretend to have always intended to be the hostess of a party, she ran into Mason snooping around upstairs and demanded to know what he was doing, leading Mason to admit he was looking for Liam.
However, the two never ended up meeting up, as Liam broke free of his chains and ran through the woods by the lake house until he was finally caught by Scott (with an assist from Chris Argent) and the True Alpha and his first bitten Beta finally came to an understanding about the change to Liam's life.

- Both show an interest in playing video games and are often seen challenging each other while hanging out in their free time, just the two of them.
- They show similarities to Scott and Stiles and their friendship with each other:
- One (Scott, Liam) is a Werewolf who was turned without warning or previous knowledge of the supernatural world, and the other (Stiles, Mason) is a human who has previously been possessed by a supernatural creature (the Void Kitsune known as the Nogitsune and the "Demon Wolf" known as the Beast of Gevaudan, respectively)
- Liam is shown to struggle with school, just as Scott did in seasons 1 and 2, while Mason is very book-smart with a high GPA, like Stiles.
- Mason was the first friend to find out about Liam's lycanthropy, just like Stiles was the first friend to find out about Scott's lycanthropy.
