ā€œ "Why can't you stay captain?"
"I'm graduating. You know, I'm not gonna be here next year. Somebody's gotta step up and fill in the gap. It should be you."
"Yeah, well, Coach doesn't want me. I don't know if the team wants me."
"It's not up to them. It's up to you. You have to want this... Because they're gonna keep coming at you. They're gonna keep knocking you down. And you have to get back up-- you have to show them that you can get back up. Leaders don't run."

Cast[]

Main Cast[]

Supporting Cast[]

Guest Cast[]

  • Jennifer Say Gon as Dr. Sandra Hugo
  • Tanner Stine as Jake Sullivan

Continuity[]

  • It is revealed that Scott is stepping down as lacrosse team captain in favor of letting Liam take his place. Scott first became captain of the team in Season 1's Lunatic.
    • This also seems to be a metaphor for Liam possibly acting as Alpha of the pack in Scott's stead while he's in college, which was first hinted in Memory Lost.
  • There are references to several past episodes and events when Scott, Lydia, and Malia realized that their memories seemed incomplete after the Ghost Riders erased Stiles from existence:
    • Scott referenced the night he was given the Bite by Peter Hale in Season 1's Wolf Moon and realized that someone (Stiles) must have been with him that night because he had no way of getting there, no way of knowing that a body was in the woods, and there was no reason the Sheriff should have known it was him specifically who was out there.
    • Lydia referenced her interactions with Stiles Stilinski in Season 1's The Tell, when she asked "What the hell is a Stiles?" when he came to talk to her the day after she witnessed Peter Hale in Alpha form attacking a video store employee responsible for the Hale House Fire. She also realized that she was meant to meet with someone earlier that morning and that she believed she loved the person, reflecting Lydia's close bond with Stiles.
    • Malia referenced the fact that she used to be locked up on the full moons in the high school's boiler room prior to the McCall Pack using the Martin Family lake house. These full moons would have occurred in the time between Malia's release from Eichen House in Season 3B's Echo House and the full moon in Season 4's The Benefactor.
      • Malia also began to lose control over her coyote urges in this episode because Stiles, the person who helped her learn control and who acts as her anchor, was erased from her memories.
  • Claudia Stilinski appeared in this episode. She was last seen in flashbacks in Season 5A's Required Reading.
  • Jordan Parrish and Alan Deaton appear in this episode. They were last seen in Season 5B's Apotheosis.
  • Ms. Fleming appears in this episode. She was last seen in Season 5B's Codominance.
  • Laura Hale and her death were mentioned in this episode. She was last mentioned in Season 3A's Visionary.
  • It is revealed that Corey's Chimera powers of supernatural camouflage are connected somehow to the Ghost Riders. Corey was first revealed to be a Chimera in Season 5A's Ouroboros.
  • Malia was seen insisting upon being the "big spoon" with one of her male suitors. It was first revealed that Malia prefers this position in Season 4's 117.
  • Despite being aware of the supernatural world, Natalie Martin still seems to be somewhat in denial that Lydia has supernatural powers. She was officially introduced to the supernatural in Season 5A's Dreamcatchers after she was attacked by the Werewolf-Kanima Chimera Tracy Stewart.
  • Natalie referenced Scott's battle with the Beast of Gevaudan when she revealed that she had to convince twenty-three students that the Beast was a large bear and that Scott's fangs were due to a made-up "acute teenage hallucination syndrome." Scott's battle with the Beast occurred in Season 5B's Maid of GĆ©vaudan.
  • It is revealed that the cube truck driver from the previous episode, Nick Mazarra, was the dead body found by Liam, Mason, and Hayden in Memory Lost.
  • Liam and Corey referenced Sebastien Valet in this episode, who was last seen in Apotheosis.
    • They also referenced Hayden getting the Bite from Scott to save her life, which occurred in the same episode.
  • Deaton referred to Scott's missing memories as similar to phantom limb syndrome, which is when an amputee imagines that their missing limb is itching or in pain. This could be an unintentional reference to Cora Hale's comment in Season 3A's Visionary, when she said that losing a packmate was more similar to losing a limb than losing a family member; in Scott's case, losing his best friend Stiles.
  • Deaton and Scott had Lydia use automatic writing in this episode in an attempt to access memories through her Banshee powers. This concept was first introduced in the series by Stiles in Season 3A's Currents.
  • Liam, Mason, and Corey referenced Schrodinger's Cat, which was a concept first discussed in the series in the previous episode, Memory Lost, by the new physics teacher Garrett Douglas.

Trivia[]

  • The title is a reference to the thought experiment known as Schrƶdinger's Cat, which deals with a physics concept known as superposition that discusses how seeing an object changes its reality.
  • It is stated that Mason has a 4.9 GPA and that Corey has a 2.7. It was also mentioned that Corey works two jobs, though it remains unknown what these jobs entail.
  • It appears that Lydia's Banshee powers are growing even stronger, as she is experiencing more premonitions that are both auditory and visual.
  • During a conversation with Scott, Deaton reveals that the Wild Hunt is known for being drawn to war and mayhem.
    • It is also implied that Deaton, too, has forgotten about Stiles' existence, just like everyone else who knows him.
