The Sword and the Spirit is the fourteenth episode of Season 5 and the seventy-fourth episode of the series.

Synopsis[]

As Scott tries to put his pack back together, Malia and a new ally set out to rescue Deaton from the Desert Wolf.

Continuity[]

This episode ends right where the flashforwards from Creatures of the Night begin, in which Lydia awakens from her catatonic state with a Banshee scream and uses the new power Meredith Walker taught her how to use to fight her way out of Eichen House. It is also revealed that Lydia did this in order to save Malia Tate from being killed by the Desert Wolf.
- Meredith told Lydia she would teach her how to use her scream as a weapon in The Last Chimera.
Ken Yukimura breaks Kira's sword blade and tells her that using her sword is the gateway to her Fox taking control. This was first indicated to be the case in Dreamcatchers, when she first displayed her new Kitsune aura and used her sword to cut off Tracy Stewart's Kanima tail.
It is confirmed that the Desert Wolf is indeed a Werecoyote in this episode, and is revealed that Malia somehow took part of her powers during her birth, which is why the Desert Wolf also uses weapons rather than purely her supernatural abilities. Her weakened state was first indicated in Ouroboros when she used a gun against Deaton and Vadim.
Theo teams up with the Desert Wolf in order to get Belasko's talons, which he intends to use to steal the Beast's power. The talons were last seen in Condition Terminal.
The McCall Pack finally starts to reform after bringing Malia and Liam back into the fold, reuniting them all together for the first time since Lies of Omission.
- Together, they also begin to put together their plan to break Lydia out of Eichen House. Lydia was admitted to Eichen in The Last Chimera.
Liam, in his own way, apologizes to Scott for trying to kill him during the supermoon in Status Asthmaticus.
Gerard Argent reveals he knows the Dread Doctors' frequency and uses an ultrasonic emitter to incapacitate them. The fact that the Dread Doctors could possibly be weakened by frequencies was first explored in the episode Strange Frequencies.
Scott and Gerard reunite for the first time since Visionary. This is the first time that Gerard has seen Scott since he became an Alpha in Lunar Ellipse.
Jordan Parrish finally learns that he is a Hellhound, and that he can shapeshift his teeth and fingernails into fangs and claws similar to a Werewolf.
The fresco painting that Theo Raeken and Hayden Romero referenced in Damnatio Memoriae is discovered by Scott, Liam, Gerard, and Chris Argent in the Dread Doctors Operating Theater.
Deucalion appears in this episode. He was last seen in Lunar Ellipse and last mentioned in Codominance.
- He is also hooked up to the same Wolfsbane IV drip that Liam Dunbar was hooked up to in Strange Frequencies and Ouroboros.
Alan Deaton returns in this episode. He was last seen in Ouroboros and last mentioned in Codominance.
The Maid of Gévaudan was referenced by Chris and Gerard Argent in this episode, foreshadowing her story being told in the episode of the same name.
Deucalion references Jennifer Blake and the fact that she healed his eyes (and that the healing was only temporary) in this episode. Jennifer was last seen in Lunar Ellipse.
- However, in Apotheosis, it will be revealed that Deucalion was merely lying to Theo and the Chimera Pack in order to lower their guard and think him an easily overpowered threat, and his vision is actually still as clear as it was when Jennifer healed him.
The Desert Wolf references Talia Hale, who was last seen in Season 3's Visionary.

Trivia[]

This episode refers to a conversation between Kira and Ken Yukimura, where he told her that the power of the spirit is always stronger than the power of the sword in order to remind her that she is worth more to the pack than just her ability to fight. This quote is attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte.
It is revealed that somehow, Malia took the Desert Wolf's powers during childbirth, which is why the latter is less powerful now and relies on her weapons. Additionally, Alan Deaton revealed that the only way that the Desert Wolf can get her powers back is if she kills Malia on a full moon, which is the only thing that stopped her from killing her in this episode (aside from the appearance of the Beast, that is).
